35 - Direction

Theme 224.

Photobucket

This is the Greenwich Time Ball, and sits on the top of Flamsteed House, next to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. It's one of the world's earliest time signals, dating from 1833. At 12:55pm each day, the ball rises halfway up the mast, then at 12:58pm it rises all the way up, before it drops at 1:00pm.

There's also the compass points on the top, which give you direction! (and me a reason to include this in my 366 posts [lol]).

(How many Alias fans are looking at that dimpled bright red ball, and thinking of the Mueller device, and the big red ball of energy?! [lol])

Excellent image. Canadian public radio broadcasts a time signal at 1:00 pm everyday. I wonder if it came from the Greenwich tradition?
